Northlight-images.co.uk received info from their sources that Canon will introduce new full-frame DSLR next year. This camera will be called Canon 3D and will have brand new sensor design. The new sensor will probably use new multi-level Foveon style sensor :
“…proposes a photo-detection method that uses a two-dimensionally laminated image sensor in which a pixel has a multilayer structure and the three colors of RGB are detected at different depths utilizing differences in the absorption coefficients of Si. In this two-dimensionally laminated image sensor, a high S/N ratio can be expected because photo detectors having a spectroscopic function are arranged and loss of light due to the presence of a color filter does not occur”
and some specs rumor about Canon 3D:
- EOS 3D priced at $3499
- Fullframe 27 megapixels Foveon-style sensor
- 5 fps
- 16 bit mode
- looks like 1Ds but without grip
- has Canon 7D seals
Canon 5D Mark III is still long way away. The camera will use a version from Canon 3D’s new sensor and will be seen at photokina 2012 (August release)

New firmware update for Canon EOS-1D Mark IV and EOS 5D Mark II. Version 1.1.0 and 2.0.9 respectively will correct some minor bugs / translation errors and also improve write/read speeds with CF cards.

This firmware update (Version 1.1.0) incorporates the following improvements and fixes.
- Improves the writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards.
- Fixes a phenomenon that occurs when using high-capacity (32 GB or greater) CF cards: If either a CF card with only a little available space remaining or the battery is removed and then reinserted into the camera, and then the user attempts to start shooting movies immediately, shooting may stop.
- Corrects some mistakes in the menu screens displayed in Arabic and Portuguese.

This firmware update (Version 2.0.9) incorporates the following improvements and fixes.
- Improves the writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards.
- Fixes a phenomenon that occurs when custom function C.Fn III-2 is set to [5: IS start] to assign IS start to the AF stop button on the lens: When used with lenses that do not have an AF stop button, the IS function will not work.
- Corrects some mistakes in the menu screens displayed in Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, and Thai.

According to a DPReview member, MrScorpio , he got info from his trusted dealer that Canon will announce 5D Mark III and 7D Mark II within a month
My local dealer, media markt, claims that the new 5d3 and 7d2 will be announced within a month and in the shelves this summer. The sales representative was so sure and convincing that I am selling my 5d2 before the price drops. He claimed the sales team already prepares for the rush of totally 7 new models/updates from Canon and Nikon, and that the new add’s from media markt are being prepared form this as we speek!
True or false ? only time will tell but fyi , Canon 5D2 is almost 3 years old while 7d is almost 2 years old. Canon , it’s time for new DSLR :)
